Discovery of a Second L Subdwarf in the Two Micron All Sky Survey
نویسنده
چکیده
I report the discovery of the second L subdwarf identified in the Two Micron All Sky Survey, 2MASS J16262034+3925190. This high proper motion object (μ = 1. 27±0. 03 yr) exhibits near-infrared spectral features indicative of a subsolar metallicity L dwarf, including strong metal hydride and H2O absorption bands, pressure-broadened alkali lines, and blue near-infrared colors caused by enhanced collision-induced H2 absorption. This object is of later type than any of the known M subdwarfs, but does not appear to be as cool as the apparently late-type sdL 2MASS 0532+8246. The radial velocity (Vrad = −260±35 km s ) and estimated tangential velocity (Vtan ≈ 90-210 km s ) of 2MASS 1626+3925 indicate membership in the Galactic halo, and this source is likely near or below the hydrogen burning minimum mass for a metal-poor star. L subdwarfs such as 2MASS 1626+3925 are useful probes of gas and condensate chemistry in lowtemperature stellar and brown dwarf atmospheres, but more examples are needed to study these objects as a population as well as to define a rigorous classification scheme. The Nature of the Late - Type Companions in Hot Sub - Dwarf Composite - Spectrum Binaries
We present the results of a study of the late-type companions in hot subdwarf composite spectrum binaries. The exact nature of these late-type companions has been disputed in the literature — some argue that they are main sequence stars, and others have claimed they are subgiants. To determine the properties of the late-type companions, we first conducted a survey utilizing the Two Micron All S...
متن کاملSingle and Composite Hot Subdwarf Stars in the Light of 2mass Photometry
Abstract. Utilizing the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) All-Sky Data Release Catalog, we have retrieved useful near-IR J , H , and KS magnitudes for more than 800 hot subdwarfs (sdO and sdB stars) drawn from the Catalogue of Spectroscopically Identified Hot Subdwarfs (Kilkenny, Heber, & Drilling 1988, 1992). This sample size greatly exceeds previous studies of hot subdwarfs. We find that, of ...
متن کاملDiscovery of an ultra-cool subdwarf: LSR1425+7102, first star with spectral type sdM8.0
We report the discovery of the coolest subdwarf reported to date. The star LSR1425+7102 was discovered in our survey for faint high proper motion stars in the northern sky. Follow-up spectroscopy revealed the star to be a very red object with the characteristic signature of M subdwarfs: strong CaH bands but relatively weaker TiO bands. The CaH molecular band at ≈ λ6900Å is particularly strong. ...

Utilizing the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) Second Incremental Data Release Catalog, we have retrieved near-IR magnitudes for several hundred hot subdwarfs (sdO and sdB stars) drawn from the Catalogue of Spectroscopically Identified Hot Subdwarfs (Kilkenny, Heber, & Drilling 1988, 1992). متن کاملThe nearest cool white dwarf ( d ∼ 4 pc ) , the coolest M - type subdwarf ( sdM 9 . 5 ) , and other high proper motion discoveries ⋆
The nearest cool white dwarf (d ∼ 4 pc), the coolest M-type subdwarf (sdM9.5), and other high proper motion discoveries Abstract. We report the discovery of seven high proper motion stars with proper motions between about 0.7 and 2.2 arcsec/yr, all at relatively low Galactic latitudes (13 • < |b| < 35 •) and located in the southern sky. They were detected in a high proper motion search using mu...
